Just in case he has that other job - you know, the one for the (ahem) Government?

I received a telephone call from my son this evening: (actually, that's enough to make me smile unless he's asking for money). He was slightly bemused himself. He is nearing the end of his 'Year in Industry' at an engineering firm in Northampton. He's done two years of academic study towards an engineering degree and has a further two years to do starting in September. But his boss called him in today to give him an unconditional offer of permanent employment in summer 2014, a termly bursary until then, paid employment for the intervening holiday periods and a request that he does his final year project at the company!

I'm stunned. Very happy for him of course, but amazed that a company would make this sort of offer to a young man who hasn't even got his degree yet. Is this because I only read Old Codgers' News which says stuff like '80% of graduates flip burgers 'cos they can't get a job'.

Is he ridiculously lucky or are engineers so sought after? Could any of you Real World engineers out there please enlighten me?

Tradesman and Craftsman are in short and desperate supply these days. You can throw a stone and find a website but how many can make that stone more aesthetically pleasing ;)

Great news Richard. Go get a bottle of bubbly to celebrate the hopeful end of calls asking for money!

From personal experience finding anyone under the age of 25 who has any kind of work ethic is near impossible. When you do find someone good you snap them up quick. It is obviously a reflection of his skills, ability to apply himself, and attitude to work - no luck involved :) Congratulations to him.

    * Ordered a couple of bike bits, :)

    * New Tomtom - bike charging shoe (4th in a year :poop:) finally arrived and seems to work

    * After getting 6 months use from my trainers, i returned them for a brand new pair as the rubber sole was just becoming unglued. (think it was the bike cleaning gel, oooops ). Great result.

    * Friend returned a borrowed tool with unexpected interest. 12 pack of beer :D

    * Its friday, (for all those working hard). :bounce: :Mdance:

I'll wait for the £s to start rolling in (supposedly summer 2014) but I do have a few bottles left in the cellar. Maybe I'll do as you suggest when he returns home in a week or two. What I'd prefer to do is take him for a celebratory ride with a few cups of tea at the end!

It was bloody awesome. I cannot express how fantastic the day was - the staff/crew are what made it so good and they really are exceptional. I'll do a proper write up later.

    Here are some more pics...

Doing some great back lanes around north Kent for the last 2 hours:thumbsup:.
Jordan did the Tun Wells enduro track day today on his 450 but the ruts were 3 feet deep & obviously very boggy so not so much fun.
