On a recent bank statement we only just noticed a DD for £10 monthly paid to Virgin (phones). Having never had a Virgin phone we queried it & were told told they ackowledged "that phone no concerned had never been used since '08 when the contract was taken out", so probably just a mistake, which although wrong & their fault, I accept sometimes happen. However Virgin will only pay out (& did so immediately) the last 6 months, having no records dating back further?? Needless to say the bank are checking their records too & may be able to make the full refund & claim it back from Virgin. Ultimately they're both saying we should be checking the statements regularly (yes, I know, we should but....) for these type of mistakes, which is their probable way out.
    Mmm...lesson learnt.

    Thieving gits

I hate shit like that...They are the ones who took the money so the onus should be on them to investigate and give it back.

G luck in getting it back...

It was only recently that I realised there were three quarterly direct debits for between £25 and £30 leaving my account and going to Carfone Warehouse.

    I called them.

Not wishing to sound too much like Ester Rantzen, they said, "It's nothing to do with us". Actually they didn't: I made that bit up. In fact, they happily acknowledged all three were their insurance company debits for my telephone, my wife's telephone and that of my son. I said that I ended those contracts in 2002.

There was a bit of a silence and then Carfone Warehouse agreed that this was indeed the case. More silence.

"Is there anything else I can help you with today, Sir?"

I told the lady that on this occasion, there is something with which I need her help. Usually this isn't the case when counter staff and telephone operators sign off with that question. Laugh? We nearly did. I asked if she wouldn't mind awfully repaying the sums which had been keeping alive insurance policies on telephones they knew no longer existed.

Guess what? "That isn't our policy, Sir". Ah, but if it isn't your policy to keep alive policies on instruments which don't exist, why did you do it?

This caused some confusion at the Carfone Warehouse end; there was a sort of strangled noise and a bump sound and another voice asked me if I needed help. I replied cheerily that I didn't need help exactly, just my money back. And explained all over again.

The net result was that because two of the phones had been 'upgraded' when I went direct to Orange, then I could receive a refund provided I could prove that I had left Carfone Warehouse's customer pool ten years ago (because their records don't go back far enough). As the third phone was not 'upgraded', I have to wear the loss.

    That's their policy.

I said it's not my policy to allow firms to take money from me to which they aren't entitled. These words apparently are meaningless when directed at a company, but are loaded with meaning when said to the customer by the firm in question.

I should report that the emotional result of all this was not uninhibited and unfettered joy at the arrival on my doormat of two sizeable cheques; rather the dumb, emptiness of a stomach punch as your ten year investment pays out less than you put in. It has paid the mortgage for the last two months but somehow it doesn't feel like that

Not his fault as he showed me the worksheet which clearly stated "To collect". So...another week to wait now:(. Logistics...pah!

its laughable really but the firm i work for are owned by a big company who have for the past 3 years messed up my wages and now, decided its no longer a sustainable buisness and are winding it up and not being very nice /fair about it so when my pay slip arrived this month stating i had been paid just short of £12k i thought ya know what ....your cock up ...you realise it .....and left it sitting there ( in hope i hasten to add ) however they called yesterday very humbly and declared there had been a clerical error and could they have thier money back please ......." of course.......remember how i have had to wait month on month for your monthly cock ups with my wages ?.........."

In the circumstances you describe, your far more trusting than me. I would be keeping all that i'm owed with interest.. Hope my cynicism proves to be unfounded.

I can understand there rationale for saying it would be ''theft'' but I think they would have a very hard time proving that as they gave you the money in the first place and that money is owed to you. Not only that, i think it could become a civil matter rather than criminal which is the last thing the management would wish if the company is folding. Were all different and you have to do what you feel is in the best interest for you and yours.
