No, but unless its totally secure it could be a risk. Unless you wanted the few quid in tax refund while its in yer shed.

If its not insured I strongly recommend a good chain and ground anchor. I have four different ground anchors  two outside for the bike or trailer, and two in the garage. The most expensive, but easiest to fit and least intrusive is http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GROUND-ANCHOR-HARDIE-SECURE-LARGE-SOLD-SECURE-GOLD-/181238585223 You usually get a concrete drill with it. Just remember to poor water over the drill bit when drilling or the bit will go blunt before you've finished the hole. :)

EDIT This one is still the large size but cheaper http://www.saundersonsecurity.co.uk/acatalog/info_HSGA.html

Afraid you will need to SORN the bike. The Continuous Insurance Enforcement "scheme" needs to be followed.

As detailed on the motor insurance bureau website:

    Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE)

As part of Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) it is a legal offence to keep a vehicle without insurance unless you have notified DVLA that your vehicle is being kept off the road by means of a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN).

You don’t have to be driving to be caught.

Under the CIE system, MIB and the DVLA are working in partnership to identify uninsured vehicles by comparing DVLA vehicle records against those held on the Motor Insurance Database (MID).

The registered keeper will be sent an Insurance Advisory Letter (IAL) telling them that their vehicle appears to be uninsured and warning them that they will be fined unless they take action. If the keeper fails to comply with the advice set out in the letter they will face:

    • a fixed penalty notice of £100
    • their vehicle being clamped, seized and disposed of
    • a court prosecution with a maximum fine of £1,000

These insurance enforcement measures are in addition to the powers the police already have to seize an uninsured vehicle and fine the driver.

    From the link below:
    http://www.mib.org.uk/Motor+Insurance+Database/en/Continuous+Insurance+Enforcement/default.htm

So if I Sorn it when the insurance runs out what happens to my tax disc? Do I have to get a refund and re apply next year when the bike will be added to a multi bike policy? seems a bit pointless tbh.

My understanding is that you need to SORN, sending back the tax disc, getting a refund on the remaining months. Check the DVLA website as I think all of this can be done on line.

When you wish to insure and tax again you simply apply for a new tax disc which takes the bike off the SORN register. I agree, a right pain but this is the way the DVLA work.

News to me Paul & I don't doubt what you say but...I don't agree with it. What better 'insurance' against theft is there while its off the road than all those security measures he'll take to prevent its theft in the first place?

I didn't have a clue they had changed the laws on insurance  Glad someone is on the ball.

although it does seam a bit pointless, they check if a car is taxed but not insured, yet you can't tax a car without insurance anyway so those running no tax or insurance aren't going to care. It seams it would only effect people with summer only transport which is the sort of thing that would be more expensive and better maintained in the first place.

I know a few people that have unwittingly fallen foul of this. Just another money making scam from the DVLA muppets. They do like to be judge, jury and executioner. I best stop now before I get in to a right old rant!!

My bike is not worth nicking and my other bike insurance want to charge me too much for adding this bike for a few months over winter even though it's going to be locked in a garage. So the solution is to wait until the policy is due for renewal and add my bike then. Cheeky buggers now charge a big admin fee for any changes and then extra for whatever style of bike your adding.

We had a ground anchor and chain on ours and thankfully had it SORNed and it got stolen. Thank god for the SORN. We had another with a ground anchor and chair and no SORN and lost it all (3 weeks before we moved back to Aussie).

It's a risk, a personal risk that you have to calculate yourself ....
