Why is it so difficult for me to pay people I kind of know to do work for me?

Case 1. A guy I know is an IT bod, I told him the guy that looks after our IT needs at work is usless, told him what we were after for the maintenance side of things, upgrades etc. He looked at our system and was 100% confidnet that he could meet all our needs. Seeing as he was in the early stages of his new business venture I said that I could sort him out - so to speak. Result: He never came back with any costs and the 'old guy' just got a £10k order for upgrading our server and another years maintenance contract.

Case 2. I wanted a set of double door wardrobe things intalled in my spare room. A guy I know just starting on self employment and was looking for work and was offered this. I told him what I needed he said at the very most two days work £250 and I supplied the materials. Great! When can you start? Result: Never been done.

Case 3. Stair and hall carpet. Guy just opened up a carpet firm around the corner from us. We enquired about cost, kind of selected a carpet and got a rough price. Made an appointment for him to come round to measure up and give firm cost. Result: No show from him. Will find someone else.

Case 4. Needed a new switch put at the other end of my garage so that no matter what way you went in to the garrage a light switch would be in handy reach. Mate said he would do it for £40 as it wouldnt take much. Result: still waiting.

Conclusion: either do these things myself - time just doesnt allow me to do all this at the moment as does lack of DIY skills! But why is it so difficult to pay people to do stuff? I am not asking for mates rates or favours just a good job. I thought we were in a recession and everyone was skint?!!!

    Sorry for the rant .

I've come across this too. In my case it seems some people promise things that are beyond them, so are too embarrassed :red: to get back.

Fergy i have a cunning plan, If you pay me to do all these things then at least half your problem is solved  you will have managed to give money away, ok it still leaves you with the other half of the problem in that the jobs still won't be done but a problem halved is better than a problem doubled :D

The number of plumbers, electricians etc who haven't got back to me over the years is ridiculous!

See you think you are trying to give money away, they see it as you getting something for far too little and expect the earth.
I know a certain person close to me (Family) who's attitude is I will not work for less than £120 a day what ever job it is, hence he is unemployed most of the time. People live in the past when people were grossly over paid for a job anyone could do.
There are many reasons today, but I agree as in cases of Friends you ask a price they give it to cheap, and then cannot find time to do it as it is not worth their while. (Real Friends do it for free).
In the General world of today, people are too under staffed and have a shit attitude towards business and just cannot be bothered to call back, I am finding it all the time now, with work, big and small companies. I get quote times for like 13 weeks now to have parts made, no one stocks anything.

Trouble is I always say give a price NOT mates rates. I dont expect the earth and I dont expect something for nothing. If they cant do the job or dont want the work just say so from the offset. Needless to say that none of the aforementioned will be given the chance again.

Basically its a set of double sliding doors from B&Q that needs a framework of sorts building into a section of my spare room and then the doors fitting. Difficult to fully explain...Easier to see the culprit??? Its not that difficult really. I just cant be bothered to spend my weekend doing it when I could pay someone I trust to leave them the keys to my house and just let them do it while I am at work. :)

Unfortunately all the bits and pieces that I had planned are kind of going on hold for a bit due to some family stuff. But as soon we are up for sorting it I will be intouch mate. Thanks.
