Carbs / Valves / Tuning

Although my bike seems to be running ok, I know that it needs a thorough service & tune. Granted, I could do the service myself, but as I'm considering selling it later this year, I want the service book to be up-to-date (the bike has FSH) and I simply don't have the ability to balance the carbs, do the valves or check cam chain tension etc.

Having spoken with SlipStream in Sevenoaks, they want about £500 to do the work. My question is this - can anyone recommend a workshop who can not only conduct a main service but also give the bike a tune and do the other work as mentioned? I'd be ok with £300ish, but £500 seems a little excessive.

I think £300 is a bit optimistic if you're wanting a shop to do all of the above, the time involved in stripping the bike apart for the valves, cam chain tension sorting carbs etc means you'd probably be running into that much just for the labour.

Hmmm. Bugger. Maybe I'll have to pester MegaWatt into doing it instead ;).

You could always give Fast Lane a call (near Tonbridge station) They do a good job for a reasonable price

I think Panel Man used Fast Lane & was quite impressed. I`m sure he has a post on here somewhere.

You could try my mate Mark, who is where I'd go if I couldn't do something myself.

Just spoke to Jamie at FastLane. £250 all-in. Valves checked, carbs balanaced, full service. Admittedly, if the valves need adjusting, that'll be a few more quid (but SlipStream said the same thing, so this was 'extra' there too). Bargain.

Having said that, I've spotted a bike on their site that I might see about p/x'ing mine with. Hmmmm...

the shims on the zx are little more of a pain to change as they are under the buckets from what i know. hence the cams have to come out... whereas just checking the clearences is rocker cover off jobby. unlike the gs where i can change the shims withough removing the cams. piece of piss to do on that..
goodprice there from the looks of it..

I dare say that if the shims need doing, it'll be somewhat more expensive. The bike sounds fine and there are no noticeable issues with it. It's a bit like going to the dentist - it's nice to have a polish & a rinse, even though nothing actually 'needs' doing. The carbs definitely need a tweek though.

Oh and yes Ducky - that cost is 'all-in'. I was equally impressed.

Jamie is the young lad there. He races bikes (an R-1, I believe) and doesn't really know the value of money. He does know about making bikes go quickly, though. Stuart is a bit older and is a pretty highly-trained mechanic. He is more aware of how much they ought to be charging! Justin is (I think) the main owner, and spends most time in the shop selling bikes and clothing. He is very, very well aware of how much he might be able to charge you! Best not explain too fully to him exactly what Jamie has done ;). They are indeed decent guys who will not rip off a complete novice (like me). Plus they're sited near Tonbridge station if you need to leave the machine with them.
