French bike test vs uk ?

    Hey, so i'm going to explain what I had to do out here, if someone who recently past their test in the UK could eplain what they did , I'd like that ! and also all the oldies tell us what you had to do back in the day !!

    so there are 3 steps you have to do !

    1- Code de la route ( highway code )
    2- Off road riding
    3- On road riding

    1 - for the highway code this is the first step , you have to go to lessons once a week , and sit in a room with a load of kids watching sh*t videos , they make you do this for 2 months ! when you consistantley do less than 3 mistakes they will let you take the test ,then you go to the exam center and hope you make less than 3 mistakes out of 40 questions .

    2 - off road riding , you are on a private track, you starts off doing a figure of 8 with tight turns, now i have been on a bike since i'm 14 on 50cc then at 17 on the RS125 , i'm now 22 , I laughed at this and then couldn't make the turn WTF!

    then there are a series of slalom patterns you have to learn and do for the test at SLOW SPEED 0-5 kph - then " high " speed 50kph

    obviously knocking over a cone is a fail.. 2 attempts allowed

    High speed : 3rd gear 50kph, start to finish must be between 19 and 22 seconds

    here you have a slalom then have to avoid cones ( simulating a a car opening a door in front of you ) and randomly doing a emergency stop straight away

    this one , you do the slalom then have to stop by down shifting the gears using engine braking

    okay, once you've done all that : if you stop in the A zone you pass , C you fail

    then comes oral test :

    3 series of tests( off by heart)and explaining what you're doing
    - turn on engine, check oil alert, turn off engine with cut out, check the clutch cable, acceleration cable , no oil leak under bike, check oil levels, check the chain, and show the inspector the bike manual .
    - check the forks , and steering, brake fluid levels, and test the levers, check suspension no leaks , check tires, and show the inspector a pair of biking gloves
    - check all lights and indicators are working, check the horn,and adjust wing mirrors, show them your helmet undamaged with the European safety logo

    then you have to do a oral presentation of 5 - 10 mins on a subject

    there are 20 Topics to learn off by heart , you must mention 75% of whats written

    1 steps to get your license , 2 how to ride after the exam, 3 alcohol and fatigue , 4 different uses for a bike vs car ,5 choosing a bike ,6 risks on a bike , 7 Equipment and maintenance, 8 riders equipment, 9 passengers and transport, 10 what to do when going for a long ride, 11 different weather and road situations, 12 riding at night, 13 Speed, 14 Braking, 15 stability and cornering , 16 general public views about bikers, 17 laws and police, 18 risks on a bike, 19 insurance, 20 Accidents

    OMG ok so once you have past all of the above !!!!! you then have ONE highway code question ( you had 40 to learn ) if you fail this question YOU FAIL THE EXAM !

    if you pass you now have the first part called " PLATEAU" and can start on road lessons .

    plateau you have to do 15hours training , road 5 hours .

    the road exam is the easy part :

    30mins on road , they check how you install yourself on the bike, must ride on country roads,motorways, do overtaking, stopping in traffic and starting off again, use of indicators and life savers NON STOP OVER HERE ! wont go into detail , and apply the french highway code that it total b$locks too ... you have to follow a direction alone for 10 mins and thats about it !

    stats :

    highway code : 53% pass first time ( I failed first time did 4 mistakes )
    off road ( plateau ) : 50% pass first time
    on road : 90% pass first time

    I congratulate you if you managed to read all this crap about the french test , it almost put me off biking for life

    My test all on the road, I had to ride round the block (a figure of 8) while being watched at various points, untill the examiner jumps out on front of you (emergency stop) then ride slowly next to the walking examiner (my one had a limp! because he jumped out in front the wrong bike!!!!! a learner who was NOT on his test) then read a number plate from a distance, then answer 3 highway code questions! job done test finished well that was in 1967
    Thats why I am a crap rider (well thats one excuse) :MC:

    well you know learning about 25 sheets of paper off by heart doesn't make you a good rider ...
    I guess the slaloms do , the slow is all about balence, every turn the bike just about makes it through the cones, but you learn to do it , and forget straight after because no one ever does such a thing on the road .

    I reckon you are a good rider if you've been on a bike since 67 ! :thumbsup:

    Jeesh, what a PITA. When I did my training, we just rode around the roads on 125s for a day or so, then a brief test (again on a 125) with the examiner following behind. The only things we had to do was to turn the bike in the street (both on and off the bike) and an emergency stop. Passed first time and bought a GSXR1100WP the very next day. This was back in about 1994.

    I haven't been riding bikes since '67, but have been since '78 (when I was 6 years old). Close enough. Less of the 'oldies' though eh? :D

    That is absolutely hilarious

    I passed in 2011. First day - CBT. How to ride slowly, how to use sidestand/centrestand, what a motorbike is, observation, highway code etc

    Second day was a nice ride into London and back via the back roads with a quick stop for theory test, 35 questions (I think) multiple choice and then a hazard perception test (watch a video and click your mouse every time you spot a hazard)

    Next part was three days on a 500cc bike (A Kawi ER-5) learning emergency stops, swerve, more observations, fig 8 etc and MOD1 test on day three - similar to your off-road section but quite a bit simpler

    Finally a day out on 500cc bikes, quick refresher of what was covered in MOD1 and the test, which is called MOD2 here.

    I wish car drivers had a bit more tuition along these lines

    it's the same test here now. with all the limits hp and age restrictions etc. They really do focus much more on bikes than cars.

    As one of the oldies to which you refer.... How very dare you.... ;)

    I took mine in Redhill on my 250 Suzuki in 1977. A man (on foot) gave me some simple directions (dont laff) whilst he stood at a central vantage point and he just watched me go round whilst making notes. For the E-Stop......... he walked out in front of me :eek:

    I passed bike test 1st time, aced the car test too (but got fined for speeding whilst coming home :confused:)

    I'm pleased they made it tougher as you all clearly need to brush up your biking skills. :D

    Like some other old gits;) on here it was ages ago in 1970 when I was 17 & supposed to be on a 250 (being army it happened to be a 350). All I did was get round an off road course in Taunton in under a certain time then 10 mins on the road being followed by a crazy sergeant telling me "bugger the limits, get a bloody move on!" Something I've done ever since.:giggle:
