what do you think about the helmet locks that you can get off ebay for around £10.
are the reliable and cant people just undo the screws and take your helmet along with the lock?

not seen them, but you might find your bike already has something like that built under the seat anyway ( assuming the seat locks? )

I got myself one of those locks for people that go backpacking, the cable part is 3m long or so, means I can lock not only the helmet but also the jacket to the bike by putting the cable through the arms...Although I would say the lock isn't the beefiest things like these are only deterants to casual thieves.

Never been a fan of locking gear to my bike myself, definitely not helmets. Mostly because it's a safety device and I don't want it left somewhere it can get knocked and bashed about without my knowing. Secondly because it's £500 if they get it off :p

Well lets not start a debate about spending ridiculous amounts of money on helments that are designed to pass the American Snell test which uses unrealistic point impact testing rather than scoring well on the more realistic Sharp test...with the cable you can place the helmet safely out of the way underneath the motorcycle, or you could fix it to the pillion seat using a bungee net with the cable just securing it from casual theft.

Debate on ridiculous amounts of money keeping your head safe? The snell cert isn't a valid form of accreditation in the UK, where all helmets have to pass the kite mark, so that's a pretty moot point you have there.

It's actually more often the smaller budget brands that come with the snell cert. because it's an easy route to more desirability and something to flaunt on advertising. The bigger brands don't need it as they already make proven products. ;)
The snell test uses a dual impact of something like 100nm on a single point to ascertain suitability, which as you say is unrealistic.

But this was hardly the precursor to a 'debate' on spending money, was it? The point you managed to miss wildly while quoting info from a report that I initially posted on here and KSB some time ago, was that helmets protect your brain in event of a crash - leaving it out unattended isn't something I'd suggest doing myself, for the sake of not carrying it. But each to their own.
