Just given blood at my local mobile vampire unit. Got a reminder that it was here today, but forgot to book a time slot. Went there a couple of times, but they were too busy. Gave me a 1820 slot, filled a form in , short interview, 1 pint donation, cup of hot chocolate and a custard cream and I was home by 1900. :)
Worth thinking about as us bikers are in a high risk group and I've received a few pints over the years?:)

You have prodded a sore spot for me: I happen to be O Negative, so my blood can go into anyone. It's years since I donated and I've just not even thought about it. I hereby promise to resume my 6 monthly donation regime! Thanks...

Believe you can do it at least 3 times a year. I did mine a few weeks ago. I'm B+, so I'm relatively rare...

I have a rare platelet disorder called Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and have in the past needed transfusions of a blood product called IVIG so the importance of people giving blood/blood products cannot be overestimated.

I cannot thank people enough for this selfless act.

I heard somewhere that the shelf life of blood is just a few days. Does that sound right?

According to this it can be stored for for 42 days or six weeks! Wow that's a long time, I would have thought before I read that that five days sounded about right

It's a Wiki but it's well referenced so should be reliable

Blood can be stored for ages. But it is used so quickly that it is rarely a problem. Biggest problem is ordering it when a patient is in A&E and not getting it into the fridge within time and it is expired. VERY strict rules about how long it can be out of fridges for!

Good reason to be A SERV Rider...you can ride lie the wind and say, ' Sorry Sir, Its the blood, a nurse said it can't be out of their fridges very long...!' - Although...you maybe come the recipient of the blood you are carrying...so maybe not such a great idea...
