Still wondering why battery flat. Had a decent run out seven days previous. Then put on charger.......still dead. Left it for a few days (disconnected from charger). Bought new battery. But before changing battery, just turned key.....battery no longer flat. New battery still in box, wossat all about?

S'very stronge. Without being able to recreate the sympton also very hard to tell. Could be a poor ingition connection when you tried it, so the battery wasn't actually dead but the switch wasn't letting the juice flow. Although I assume the battery was actually reported dead when on the charger?

If the battery discharged while on a charger, then either your charger doesn't, there's a really bad earth or possibly a dodgy cell within the battery that's causing fluctuations. Have you checked the battery with a multimeter?

Yup, reported as dead on charger. Charger works just fine. Will check battery with multimeter on the morrow. New battery purchased so will be replaced anyhoo.
    Now for a JD!

Digging out the box with the wii and all its bits in only to have no clue whatsoever as to how it all goes together... so many damn wires. I think a glass of gin might be required before I try and tackle this lot!

    That's shocking. :p

The flat ended ones are to the TV, the 2 pronged one is power and the other 2 are wireless controllers and attach to each other! Are you bringing it tonight then? ;)

Hmmmm... I have a feeling that a good proportion of the wires in the box are nothing to do with the wii... I think it's set up now but I'm not sure if the left over bits that are definitely wii related are to do with the wii fit/balance board component which I'm not setting up. Will find out shortly when I connect it to the TV etc.

Not intending to bring it tonight... just setting it up as it's been sitting in a box in the garage since September last year i.e. when I moved down here!

I don't have one myself, but as long as you have one lead to the TV and one to the power that should be the necessities covered .

Less wires = more Gin time!

Gah! So it's set up okay, gone to use a new CD and the bloody thing won't work. So, set up internet connection okay to go through the system updates... all good and update in progress - then it stops and says there's an error and to go to the website help function thingy. Stupid sodding machine. Grrrr...

Ogy is a hungry car, and it appears his diet consists of petrol (fuel gauge works, but damn is 90 inefficient!) and fan belts...

This happened about 15miles from home far as I can guess, about to call the breakdown people and ask who trained the monkey that fitted it!

skortchio i can see the problem straight away, the fan belt should be a continuous length and yours isn't :D

Dude, what would I do without your sage knowledge and amazing eye for diagnosis.

Alan, I had a bit of a read up before bed (because really can't just leave things alone) and the top contenders are, as you say: One of the sindles out of alignment, the belt being fitted too tight / much too loose (although that would be more likely to just slip alot), worn bearings on one of said spindles (most likely from a belt being fitted too tight).

I'm really hoping it was just put on a bit enthusiasticly or the alternator wasn't bolted up square, you know rather than having to get another one! As I'm not good enough at complaining to make them pay for it.

Did the AA get you home? They usually have a little stock of popular sizes of fan belts. Where's OGY now?

Whatever is wrong, it must be very wrong, because the poor car has done bu$$er all mileage - very miss-aligned and over-tightened seem likely, I agree. When you get 'er back, the Haynes manual will tell you what chain belt deflection is allowed. And surely inspection by eye will give away miss-alignment?

I got me home (well Ogy did), was only 15miles and it was dead cold so after a quick consideration I floored it and made a dash for home.
Pulled into the car park in a cloud of steam and boiling noises, but a quick check under the hood didn't show any cracks (that I could tell) and only the the belt as a casualty.

The RAC were the ones who fitted the belt, a week ago. They're due here any minute, hopefully not the same monkey who put it on. They had to go shopping for the belt last time, seems A series isn't a popular size these days... No idea why ;)

Indeed, I fell for that schoolboy error of trusting the employed 'professional' to have done a sterling job. You see, I really do want to trust people's competence and honestly believe that they exercise care and attention when working on someone elses vehicle, but it's hard when I get proven repeatedly that they're all f*cking clownshoes!

Shouldn't of trusted 'em was the mistake. I'll be checking it again myself this time. You live and learn, but apparently can't drive 200miles without a lesson.

Oh, I used 80% of a tank getting to the pub and back. You think it's over fueling ?

I'd have recommended popping the bonnet and driving slowly in top gear, slipping into neutral and idling where possible, since it's mainly movement through the air which cools an engine, not the fan and radiator, but I guess Timo Makinnen-style works too! You gotta pack some stockings in future! Halfords used to sell a get-you-home fan belt for all makes and models - maybe Father Christmas could bring one?
