Don't you feel it was rather a waste of your effort? You may be casting intellectual pearls before swine. I reckon with any motorcycle of 400cc or over, the determining factor of ultimate speed in real-world conditions is the carbon-based life form piloting it along - anyway: this is my excuse for being overtaken by bikes more often than I overtake others despite my bike being faster on paper! It's how you ride rather than what you ride, isn't it?

Dead right Richard. It's not what you ride , it's how you ride it. Some people ride like tvats on a big fast bike and some on smaller bikes know what they're doing. Very satisfying overtaking a big bike on a wide bend on a smaller bike.

There are times when I'm happy to bimble no matter what I'm on.

I promise to give you lots of opportunities to satisfy this peculiarity - 'cept your bike is more than 750cc isn't it?

i'd say any bike with 249 cc can mix it up pretty well on anything but the straightest of roads with any bike. just look at the race times at any track to see that it's a couple of seconds between 250's 400's 600's and 1000's and thats all with good riders. so an average rider or worse against a good rider on a smaller bike will get whipped every time until a duel carriage way or very long straight appears

Because it's laying on my desk and not doing it's job of turning the impeller and alternator.

You could have used it on the 'What the Heck is That?' thread - now you've blown it. This is also an argument for wearing tights ...isn't it? My Dad used to regale people with a story of getting his old Austin home by borrowing my Mum's stockings. I did rather worry that he was getting a bit mixed up over the stocking removal bit and the purpose of taking her out in the car, but it was his memory and I didn't want to interfere. And he was always a practical sort of chap. :rubhands:

It's a long story...I tried it once & may have worked if it wasn't for the knot.

A cunning plan and one that was considered, but apparently no one wears silk anymore (pity) and I'm yet to build a suitable toolkit for the Mini that can come along with me.
Still, recovery only took 3 hours and then today they came out to fix the belt for me.... What they didn't say was that I was chargable for the belt. Although after a brief debate it was decided that I wouldn't be paying the £19:50 initially suggested as I was not only capable of changing the thing myself but also buying one for a little over £6.
Final price was £10, which was worth it just to see the RAC guy turning pink while trying to remove the alternator bolts I'd done up .

Silk stockings have very little stretch in them and therefore you tend to get baggy knees/ankles after a few wears. Not a good look. :D

This is vital information, Hanna - thank you. If they have very little stretch, they would appear to be eminently suitable to be used as an emergency fanbelt. I don't understand why wearing silk would give you baggy knees and/or ankles: I should have expected quite the reverse effect, in fact. The stockings might well display these symptoms, I suppose, but isn't their ultimate purpose to enhance further the already stunning looks of the lady wearer? And if they work properly, isn't their (how to put this delicately?) periodic time in service limited because they will be hurriedly removed by the over-eager admirer? :sneaky:

When I was an `Erbert whizzing noisily about on my FS1E I used to wear a white silk scarf tied round me chops to try & keep some of the winter chill out. That too went baggy after about 2 weeks, did a bloody good job of keeping the chill off still though.

Leaving my wallet in the door pocket of my colleague's car when he dropped me at home two hours ago. Trouble is, I was going to do some on-line payments tonight (need that debit card to put into the Barclays number generator Thingy) and I have to use same piece of plastic to go to the Post Orifice tomorrow to buy road tax for my car (having tried a week ago to do it on line but discovered my MoT ran out the day before); now I have to ride over to his house in Folkestone (not so bad you may think) but I washed and polished the machine at the weekend and I have just checked tomorrow's forecast :rain:.

I have to convert this into positive thinking:
    1. the credit card people don't deserve to have my money anyway
    2. I like Gary and even though I've just spent two days in very close company with him mostly sitting in his car, I look forward to seeing him again. He may even offer me a cup of strong tea.
    3. I will enjoy the ride to Folkestone and then back to the T/Wells Post Awfulness where I can have entertaining discourse with a possibly illegal immigrant and cheer up his or her day, thus feeling good about myself.
    4. As a special bonus, I will really enjoy rewashing and polishing my once near pristine bike.
    5. Those emails and steaming customers will be all the better for maturing for another half day.

    I'll report back tomorrow night...
