Why would you carry a sponge?

Why not a toothbrush bag? Or a soap bag? Or a deodorant bag? Do you really carry a sponge? And what do you use said sponge for? What happened to the good ole toiletry bag?

And to think I thought I was all up-to-date on the UK idioms!! :think1:

A little known custom amongst the British male.....their Fathers pass on an ancient and very smelly sponge when they turn sixteen. It has to be kept in a bag, rarely to see the light, unless the male is staying away from home, then it is a must that the aforementioned sponge bag travels with him and protects him from any harm and comforts him in the dark of night. Panel Man obviously had not looked after his sponge bag and it is, as we speak, thumbing a lift to pastures new.
