Looking to change the pipes on my VN900, want loud, fed up with sounding like a hairdryer with attitude, but then people start talking about Lambda sensors and catalytic converters.....what happened to the good old fashioned "make it fit" brigade?
Anyone know of somewhere that will sell me some decent pipes obviously as cheap as possible and give me some proper IN ENGLISH advice.
    Many thanks

Have you tried 'Plumb Center'? :D

Failing that, can't you modify the standard ones (ie remove packing / baffles)? Stupid question, but is your bike fuel injected (I know nothing about VNs)?

A lambda sensor detects the amount of oxygen passing through the exhaust & tells the engine management to adjust the air fuel mixture if it senses too much or too little. It looks like a little spark plug fitted to the exhaust a bit like this.

You have 4 ways of dealing with it.

    1. Get pipes with Lambda mounting holes & just unscrew the old one from your current pipes & install in the new ones.
    2. Get any pipes & have a competent person weld in an Lambda sensor mounting suitable for your one.
    3. Buy an O2 eliminator. This replaces the lambda sensor with a little box that makes the engine fools the engine into thinking theres one fitted.
    4. Buy any set of pipes you like, along with a freeflow air filter & something like a power commander V. (Expensive!)
This site show which pipes come with them already fitted. http://www.metriccruisers.co.uk/acatalog/vn900custom_exhausts.htmlbut it seems the only ones for your bike at the shortcuts. On the plus side, they are also the cheapest. To give you an idea of volume, my bike has "fat pipes" fitted with the supplied baffles.
This site gives you the option of any of their range with or without mountings. http://www.customcruisers.com/Custom2005/customshop2005/contents/en-uk/d1212.html

I can make you stainless steel pipes with Lambda sensor threads and baffles, but I can't tune your injection system. You will need a power commander and a custom map for that???

Just adding a set of pipes won't throw your ECU off enough to worry about, no sense paying out £300+ for a stand alone fuel management computer on a bike with 40bhp anyway :p

Buy standard pipes, drill a hole and weld a captive nut onto the header for the lambda sensor or look on the VN forums - quite often they can be bypassed with a strategically placed paperclip.

Drilling a couple of subtle holes in the stock baffles is a time honoured tradition also, looks stock but has more growl without being ear bleeding uncomfortable.

To be honest, with the headroom you have for economical performance I'd just get Mega to bend you some SS into a pleasing shape and be done with it.

My point is, that people riding 'performance' bikes don't bother getting them correctly set up, no reason to do it on a cruiser. Unless it's my cruiser, but that will have carbs ;)

Two into ones it is! Holes drilled for Lambdas, slashcuts were a no no.
'Kin typical that it is the more expensive ones that are right innit!

No clue, tiger......but I did prefer the more expensive ones for the VN, just had decided to be almost sensible and go for the slashcuts, so it didn't take too much persuasion really. Would only spend the money on something sensible so f*ck it hey! It only means I get back to being broke a bit quicker.......only now, the grin will be bigger every time I fire Turmoil up :disco::disco::disco:
